The Food Action Network of Northwestern Ontario (FAN-NWO) connects people, organizations, and communities to grow equitable, sustainable, and resilient food systems across the region. From strengthening emergency food response to supporting local food production and harvesting, our work is rooted in care for people, the planet, and future generations.
Evolving from three decades of community-led food work, starting with the Thunder Bay Food Action Network (1995), and on to the Thunder Bay + Area Food Strategy (2014), FAN-NWO serves as the regional hub for food systems collaboration. Guided by the Thunder Bay + Area Food Strategy and the principles of the Thunder Bay Food Charter, we bring together farmers, community organizations, Indigenous knowledge keepers, researchers, institutions, businesses, and local governments to advance food security, sovereignty, and resilience.
Organized around the seven interconnected pillars of the Thunder Bay + Area Food Strategy (Food Access; Food Production; Food Infrastructure; Procurement; Urban Agriculture; School Food Environments; and Forest & Freshwater Foods), we work with partners across the region to put food at the heart of community well-being.
